Geocache Description:

A small collection of caches placed around the area of RAF Sawbridgeworth that was once an active airfield. This is a very quick cache and dash with parking very close to GZ.

You are looking for a small black tub. It was particularly hard to get consistent coordinates in this spot due to tree cover, but you shouldn't have a problem spotting exactly where it should be!

The VHF/DF Hut

On the opposite side of the road to this cache location, a few meters south west was the building housing the VHF/DF (Very High Frequency/Direction Finding) system although sadly today there are no longer any remains of it. The work to fit this commenced in January 1942. The DF equipment was housed in a wooden ten-sided igloo structure with small windows and intended to be blast-proof (although never tested). The operators were lodged in a nearby brick building.

This brick building stayed in place up until around 5 years ago when it was demolished. I remember walking past it with my father and brother many times as a child. There never was much to see though apart from old tin cans and the usual magazines! It was home to a few local tramps over the years too until it got boarded up before it's demolition. In the middle of the field near the crossroads just up the road from here, a searchlight position was located along with the DF site.
