As a devotee of this awesome a**kicking (to borrow a friend's description) hike up to Tehachapi Peak, this cache is placed at a fallen tree stump where I always feel I'm 'over the hump' on my way to the summit's elevation of 7,982'.
There are many caches in the Tehachapi Mountain Park that can be found without too much time or effort. But if you are a hiker and enjoy the solitude of a forested trail with Jeffery Pine, White Fir, and an occasional Sugar Pine--then here's the geo-challenge for you!
Begin your trek at Oakflat Campground: 35.03.959 118.28.948 elevation: 6,086. The trail begins east of the campground, crosses a ravine, goes past a water storage tank up to a fire road. The fire road ends at "The Landing" at 7,022'.
This is where the fun begins! A narrow trail now leads straight up, and "Hump Stump" Cache is at 7,664'. Finding it should not be a problem. And once you've signed the log, had some water and regained your wind--remember, you are really over the hump and the summit is a mere 318' higher and only 15-20 minutes away.
From the campground to the peak is approximately 2 miles and 2,000' of elevation gain. In addition to this cache, there are two others just off the trail between it and the campground, plus another one at the peak. Everyone's ability is different, but you should allow a minimum of two hours to grab Hump Stump and return to your car. If you do all the caches on the trail, including the peak, plan on a minimum of four hours from beginning to end.
Stuff your day pack with a jacket, hat, water, snacks and lace up your sturdiest hiking boots. A hiking stick is also highly recommended. Remember, coming down the trail is just as steep as going up. And if Fido is making the trip too, bring a leash, water for him/her and check for ticks after the hike!
There is a special reward in the cache--one each for the first, second and third to find it.
Happy hiking and caching on this trail!
