This Geocache is located in the Superior National Forest with the permission of the Gunflint District Ranger. The access road for this site is approximately 45 miles from Grand Marais, MN and is known as the Gunflint Narrows Road located immediately beyond the Cross River Bridge. There is a gravel pit on this road as well as summer cabins. You can walk the road or drive it for quicker access to the geocache.
The Cross River meanders alongside this road as it winds its way way through the woods. The Ham Lake Fire of 2007 passed through this area but there are still stands of old pine trees. The terrain is somewhat hilly and there is a swamp next to the road that is a good spot to see wildlife. Deer, moose and wolves are sometimes seen in this area.
The Cut Across Trail is part of the Border Route Trail and is also used as a cross-country ski trail during the winter. It connects Gunflint Narrows Road and the Magnetic Rock Trail to North Gunflint Lake Road and additional ski trails.
Vehicles are not allowed on the Cut Across Trail itself. If you drive to the beginning of the trail(1.2 miles) then be sure to pull off to the side of the road so vehicles may pass by.
It's a short hike to the location of the geocache(less than 5 minutes). It's located in a beautiful area with both old and new growth as well as lichen covered granite.
