Moscow, ME Moscow, Russia
Welcome to Moscow, Maine. Home to Wyman Lake, the Kennebec River
and Wyman Dam. As you stand retrieving the cache container, look up
and to the east and you will be viewing Wyman Dam. According to the
home page of the Town of Moscow, it was first settled around 1783.
By the early 1800's, the population had increased and in 1812, a
petition to incorporate the town was signed. While the town had
gone by the name of Bakerstown...after the first settlers...there
already was a Bakerstown in southern Maine (now Poland). The town
finally took the name Moscow, named after the Russian city that was
burned in 1812 by the citzenery to drive the French soldiers out.
It was incorporated on January 30, 1816, the 211th town in Maine.
Some notable features include Union Cemetery that has the grave of
Joseph Kirk, one of Benedict Arnold's soldiers. Arnold, of course,
famous for his march thru Maine, along the Dead River and Kennebec
on his way to Quebec. In addition, Moscow is home to Wyman Dam,
constructed in 1928 to 1930. Built by a crew of 2400, it replaced a
natural course of rapids 140 feet high. The top of the dam is
around 3000 feet long. Moscow, Russia is the capital of Russia and
is the major political, economic, cultural center of Russia. First
known references to Moscow date back to 1147, according to
Wikipedia. Situated on the Moskva River, it is home to some of the
most outstanding architecture in the world as well as home to the
Kremlin, where the presidential residence is located and also home
to the Moscow Metro, one of the premier subway systems. And of
course, home to Red Square. As mentioned previously, Moscow was
burned by Muscovites in 1812 as Napolean's army layed seige on the
city. The army was forced to retreat and suffered some 400,000
casualties. Some of the Kremlin's stone structures date back to
1320's but in the modern era it is best known as the seat of
governemnt for the former Soviet Union. Today it remains home to
the president, the parliment and Lenin's tomb. Red Square is
another famed location in Moscow, however many do not know that the
origin of the name does not come from the red bricks or from the
Soviet era of communism. Rather the Russian word krasnaya can mean
red or beautiful. The word meaning beautiful was most likely used
to describe Saint Basil's Cathedral, located at one end of Red
Square next to the Kremlin. I've had the fortunate experience to
visit Mos cow, Russia; it truly is an amazing city. Congratulations
to Tandemstoker for the FTF, her second FTF on the Maine World Tour
Series.
