Geocache Description:

Cracked It!

The cache is one of two (the other being Step On It! GC2Z4RD) located on this great, relatively short stretch of contour path running between St James Ravine and Bailey’s Kloof along the lower slopes of the east Silvermine mountains above southern Muizenberg with some fine views of the mountains and False Bay along the way.

To reach the cache:

1. From the St James Ravine end: Park in the small lay-by on Boyes Drive @ S34 06.950 E18 27.512 next to the Ou Kraal sign and head up the Old Mule Path a short distance before heading right up the trail which zig-zags its way up the left side of the ravine before heading across the stream bed and back upwards north-east towards th e cache location.

2. From the Bailey’s Kloof end: Park in the lay-by on Boyes Drive @ S34 06.753 E18 27.788. Head up the trail to the junction with the contour path @ S34 06.724 E18 27.695 and then turn left (south) to head towards the caches.

The cache, a small camo-taped tablet pot is hidden in the rock face just above a small tree which is to the right of a shallow rock shelter near where the trail starts its descent towards the stream crossing. Note: GPSr readings in this area are not reliable so you will need to rely on the description - and use the spoiler photos if necessary...

Please note that no difficult or dangerous scrambling up the cliffs is required - just 2 or 3 steps up the rock (using the tree for initial footholds) with good handholds will get you to the required spot.

From the cache you can either return the way you came or continue to the other end and walk approx. 600m along Boyes Drive back to your starting point.

Of course this walk can be incorporated into longer hikes, for example including the Old Mule Path and/or Hilltop Path to make a complete circuit of lower and upper contour paths. See Peter Slingsby’s Silvermine Map for details of available routes and access points.

Congratulations to FollowThatRainbow on a hard-earned FTF!!
