Geocache Description:

A cache that takes you to one of my favorite places in Iceland. Breathtaking panorama view. About 500m difference in altitude from the near road. Visit, hike and enjoy!

The Hatta Mountain near Vík i Mýrdal.

In preparation for my first trip to Iceland I studied some maps and found this Mountain called Hatta! The name has the meaning of the english word "hat", probably because of the mountain's shape. However, in our german homezone, "Hatta" is a loud exclamation, meaning that you've found the cache box! After that decision I took a close look in Google Earth to work out the best hiking track to the summit and I found the lake Heiðarvatn very close to the Hatta. What a beautiful sight this must be! It takes about 1-1.5 hours from the starting point to the summit. The extremly strong wind and 3°C could not take the smile away from our faces when we enjoyed the 360° panorama view! The complete tour may be done within 2 hours.


We wish you a very pleasant mountain hike. Please keep in mind, it´s about 500m difference in altitude for reaching the summit. Sometimes it´s quite steep. No public footpath, but you can walk where the grass goes up near the ridge. Please don´t disturb the sheeps. Some cachers reported, that the path from the south with the starting point close to the graveyard is another good way to reach the summit.
