Geocache Description:

A small cache to commeorate the passing of department store well known for their commercials with shoppers chanting "Open...Open...Open".

Mervyns began on July 29, 1949 with its first store in San Lorenzo, a working class community about 20 miles south of Oakland. Its initial growth was concentrated in the Bay Area, growing to two stores in 1964 and four in 1966. Gradually, it spread across the West Coast and eventually elsewhere, with 42 stores by 1977 and 100 stores by 1983.

In January 1978, Dayton Hudson Corp. (parent of Target) announced a $291 million, all-stock acquisition of Mervyn’s.

In July 2004, Target announced sale of Mervyn’s to a group of private equity firms. Shortly after the sale, the new owners pre-emptively filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2008 with the hope that the stores would eventually emerge from Chapter 11. Instead, on Oct. 17 2008 the owners announced plans to liquidate all remaining inventory and close its 149 remaining stores.

In June 2007 Mervyns filed plans with the city of Newark to build a new store of nearly 81,000 square feet just north of the mall, where it has operated a store for 22 years.

By December 2008 this newly finished Mervyns closed it's doors for good after being open at this location for less than one week.
