Geocache Description:

This cache goes out to KristelS!

Cache is placed on private property. Anyone wanting to visit the Sacred Oak is welcome. You are asked to please be respectful of the property, and to use the supplied parking coordinates. NO NIGHT CACHING...NO EXCEPTIONS!

The current owner welcomes visits to the tree. Years of neglect had left the oak slowly dying. Under the new owners care, the tree is thriving once again! At least 50 trees have been cleared from around the oak to give it some breathing room.

Please park on Heffner Lane and walk across the road to a stone driveway that leads around a barn to a path that leads directly to the Sacred Oak. Be careful crossing the road. This can be a busy road at times.

The Sacred Oak of Oley is a yellow oak, not native to this area. While there is no way of knowing how the oak got here, experts have estimated the tree to be at least 400 years old.

Many legends surround the Sacred Oak dating back to Native American times, when the only locals were the Lenapes. One legend has it that the wife of a chief had fallen gravely ill. The medicine men were called upon and administered their herbal cures and pow-wows with no results. In desperation, the chief traveled to the Sacred Oak and prayed to the Great Spirit to heal his wife. By the time he returned to camp, she had recovered.
