Bell and "The Wee Man"
When the War
Memorial was originally constructed in 1921, the statue in the
centre was smaller than life size and known as the "Wee Man". Then
on the 9th August 1998 the statue was stolen. Public contributions
replaced the statue with a new life size one, which was dedicated
by the HRH The Princess Royal, on the 20th September 1999.
Eventually the "Wee Man" was found in a storage area for disused
stalls at the back of Ingliston Market Show Ground, by PC Thorburn
and PC Pennycook and returned on the 3rd February 2000. Following
restoration the "Wee Man" has been replaced within the heart of the
village within a new Memorial Garden and dedicated by Miss Molle
McIntosh MBE, four years to the day from the time it was
stolen.
