Geocache Description:

Cache hidden behind the sand dunes close to a hiking trail. Please try to walk in the valleys and leave the hillsides and tops free for birds and animals. Walking behind the sand dunes is easy enough, though the sand can make it a bit challenging at some points.

The container is a transparent plastic bottle with screwcap. Cache contains some logsheets, and pencil. One recent thing I learned was that the black sand that is visible in some places is magnetite, which is iron-rich and thus ferromagnetic. Some locals still don't know what the black stuff is, and can falsely claim that it is oil or some other pollution. This is because when the black stuff is wet, it appears very much like a thick oil. But it is easy to disprove: it doesn't smell, and it sinks in water. If you dry the stuff, it behaves just like regular sand. But the black sand is smaller particles, and so behaves differently when water flows through the sand. This makes the black sand group together, possibly also an effect from a difference of density (needs quality control from a geologist).

I tried to make an illustration of this inside the bottle by putting one layer of normal sand and one layer of black sand on top, and then gluing it together. It half-worked, but due to a lack of glue, there were some holes and the rest of the sand leaked out. Let's see how long the thing lasts.

For kids: Take any magnet and separete the magnetic black particles from the white sand, right on the beach! It makes an awesome pattern on most kitchen magnets, and you can make a pile of precious magnetite! Maybe the magnet inside your brother's or sister's portable speaker will do...
