Het Beatrixkanaal
Het Beatrixkanaal is een zijkanaal van het Wilhelminakanaal. Het is ruim 8 km lang, ongeveer 20 meter breed en gemiddeld 2 meter diep. Origineel gegraven in de periode van 1930 tot 1940 met een onderbreking van 4 jaar vanwege geldgebrek. Pak deze kans om een tocht te maken langs dit mooie stukje Brabant!
Het Beatrixkanaal begint bij de Driesprong. Dit is het punt waar het Beatrixkanaal aansluit op het Wilheminakanaal. Doordat het Beatrixkanaal verder geen splitsingen of kruispunten kent, is deze naam heel toepasselijk (en bruikbaar).
Een eindje naar het zuiden ligt de Spottersplek. Deze parkeerplaats ligt tegen vliegveld Eindhoven Airport aan. Als de tijd het toelaat dan is het de moeite waard om hier een poosje te wachten tot er een vliegtuig komt landen. Het is waanzinnig om zo’n groot bakbeest zo laag over je hoofd te zien gaan.
Een stukje verder naar het zuiden ligt de Vissersplaats. Deze plek is verhard en heeft een lage balustrade waardoor ook invalide vissers hier veilig hun hobby kunnen beoefenen. Deze plek kent ook nog een ander naam: de Indianenvallei. In het Beatrixkanaal is één waterscoutinggroep gevestigd (zie ook: GC22C0F). De naam Indianenvallei verwijst naar het thema van het eerste groepskamp dat zij hier gehouden hebben. Met enige regelmaat zijn zij hier nog te vinden voor een zaterdagmiddag-activiteit of een weekeind-kamp.
Verder stroomopwaarts ligt de Beatrixhaven. Dit is de enige aanlegplek voor recreatievaart in Eindhoven. Helaas zijn er weinig ligplaatsen in het water maar des te meer op de kant. Zeker tijdens het winterseizoen zijn hier een hoop mooie boten te zien. Meer informatie over de jachthaven vind je op hun website. We hebben dan bijna het hele Beatrixkanaal gehad. De omgeving laat nu ook meer bebouwing zien. Op de Kanovereniging na zitten hier niet veel bedrijven die iets met het kanaal doen.
Aan het einde van het kanaal ligt de Zwaaikom. Deze wordt voornamelijk gebruikt als de haven voor de beroepsvaart. Deze schepen verzorgen de aanvoer van goederen voor een paar bedrijven die gevestigd zijn om de Zwaaikom. Daarnaast is dit de thuishaven van de Dr. A. F. Philips Waterscouting. Zij liggen hier met hun wachtschip (de Veruna), een jachtje (de Hågar) en hun zeilvletten. Op zaterdagen kan je hier hun activiteiten zien.
Dit is het einde van het Beatrxkanaal. Verder stroomopwaarts ligt het afwateringskanaal dat aftakt van de Dommel.
Genoeg gepraat… tijd om iets te gaan doen. Bijgevoegd is een schatkaart. Los deze op om het begincoördinaat te vinden.
De schatkaart is beschikbaar in twee versies.
- De Excel versie kan je direct gebruiken voor de oplossing (1 maakt een vakje zwart, a maakt een vakje geel). De schatkaart (xls)
- De PDF versie is beter om te printen (en voor de mensen die geen Excel hebben). De schatkaart (pdf)
Als je denkt de begincoördinaat gevonden te hebben dan kan je dat hier controleren. Maar voordat je op pad gaat wil ik nog een paar adviezen meegeven:
- Als je coördinaten tegen komt dan zijn die altijd in het HDD°MM.MMM’ formaat waarbij de 51° en 5° zijn weggelaten.
- De route volgt het kanaal en loopt dus niet in een cirkel. Als je je vervoermiddel aan het begin achterlaat zul je dus ook dezelfde afstand (± 8 km) weer terug moeten. Advies is dus om deze tocht met de fiets te doen. Daarnaast is deze cache heel goed per boot te doen.
- Voor deze cache heb je een uitgeprinte versie van de volledige opgeloste schatkaart nodig. Probeer het middenveld zonder de getallen zo vierkant mogelijk te printen! (En als je moeite hebt met het nauwgezet volgen van instructies dan zijn twee of drie kopietjes misschien wel verstandig.)
- Tot slot kan ik me voorstellen dat de zon niet altijd voldoet. Voor die gevallen zou een (sterke) zaklamp handig zijn.

The Beatrixcanal
The Beatrixcanal is an arm of the Wilhelminacanal. It is over 8 km long, about 20 meter wide and has an average depth of 2 meter. Originally dug over a ten year period (between 1930 and 1940) with a four year intermission due to financial problems. Grab the chance to travel along this beautiful piece of Brabant!
The Beatrixcanal starts at the Three Way Junction. At this point it connects to the Wilhelminacanal. This name suffices because there are no other junctions along the canal.
A bit to the south we find the Spottersplek. This parking lot is attached to Eindhoven Airport. If you have the time, take a break. Planes regulary land here and it insane to see such a big beast coming overhead.
A little further along to the south lies the Visserplaats. This place used to be accessible for motorized vehicles with a low railing so handicapped fishermen could enjoy their hobby here. This place has a secondary name: the Indian Valley. The Beatrixcanal is home to one Waterscouting group. The name Indian Valley points to the first themed group camp they held here. Every once in a while they still can be found here for their saturday activities or weekend camp.
Going further upstream we find the Beatrix harbor. This is the only spot for recreanational ships in Eindhoven. Unfortunaly it hasn't very many mooring spaces but it has plenty of the area for maintainance on land. During the winter you can a find lot of nice ships here. More information about the harbor can be found on their website. And if time permits you can pick up this traditional: Triangle I: Jachthaven.
We're almost at the end of the Beatrixcanal. The area is getting more rural. Besides a lot of companies who use the canal, there is also a canoo club.
The canal ends in the Zwaaikom. This area is mainly used by professional ships. These ships transport goods to and fro the companies located along the Zwaaikom. This is also the home location of the Dr. A. F Philips Waterscouting. They have their own ship here (the Veruna), a yacht and their sailing boats. On Saturdays you can see them in action.
This is the end of the Beatrixcanal. Further upstream the water is called the Afwateringscanal which is attached to the Dommel.
Enough talking, time for some action. Attached you'll find a treasure map. Solve it to find the starting coordinate. There are two versions of the treasure map.
- The Excel version can be used for solving (1 changes the box to black, a makes it yellow). The treasure map (xls)

If you think you've found the starting point then you can check that here here. But before you head out, let me give you some advice:
- Coordinates are always presented in the HDD°MM.MMM’ format where the 51° and 5° have been omitted.
- The track follows the canal and does not go into a circle! Leaving your vehicle at the start means you'll have to make the trip twice (which is approx. 8 km one way). My advice is to do this cache by bike. Other option would be by boat.
- For this cache you need an print out of the solved treasure map. Try to print it as square as possible! (And if you find it hard to follow instructions, better print two or three copies)
- Finally: it is possible that the sun doesn't always suffice. In those cases a flashlight would be handy.
