Geocache Description:

[RO]

Between 1486-1488 was raised of stone the Orthodox Church "St. Paraschiva" in Gothic style, instead of an older one, probably wooden. From the informations held in documents of the time, results that in the XVth century on the Feleac Hill worked an Orthodox monastery contemporary with the reign of Stefan the Great.
Some experts attribute to this monastic settlement the copying of a Slavonic Liturgy in 1481, and a Four Gospels (the four canonical gospels collection) by order of Archbishop Daniel, who had been residing here.
But the real controversy is related to the foundation of this church by the great Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great between 1486 - 1488, and the existence of a second Orthodox bishopric in Transylvania, the Feleac, parellel whth Vad bishopric and relatively at short distance of it.
Historians are divided, there are opinions pro and against this theory. The fact is that when restoring the church by King Ferdinand in the 1920's, inscription left on this occasion not remember such an Augusta foundation.
At the end of the nineteenth century was installed a bust of Stephen the Great to the west of the church at the expense of George Sion.
What can be said with some certainty does not diminish the aura of holy shrine: it exists, certainly by 1516 (two years after the uprising of Gheorghe Doja!), is a monument of Gothic architecture, possibly influenced by Moldovian style and has murals paintings and icons painted by the Feleacu house painter Nistor.
This church should not be confused with that of the monastery Feleac, located a few kilometers to the southeast.
