Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed and maintained by my husband (gillymalcy/maninahsed). On his untimely death from Pancreatic Cancer in November 2014, I added this and other caches to my collection in 2015.

Lost station of Ossett, This was the original Ossett Station.

Flushdyke Station was the first station to be opened in Ossett in 1862 as a temporary terminus off the Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds railway. The line extended to Ossett and then on to Batley in 1864 when the line was doubled throughout. By 1883, Ossett had three railway stations: at Flushdyke, Ossett and Chickenley Heath, all on the Wakefield, Batley and Bradford branch of the Great Northern railway. Flushdyke station finally closed in 1941.

After cuts by Dr. Beeching in the 1960s, there are now no railways stations in Ossett and it is said that Ossett is the largest town in Yorkshire not to have its own railway station.

Flushdyke Station was the first station for ossett, until the line was connected to dewsbury/batley. Originally the station was situated on the north side of Dewsbury rd, and then later relocated to the south side.

When trying to locate the old station it was nearly impossible due to the industrialisation of the area, but I spotted the short section of brick wall on the opposite of the road which is completely out of place and would I believe be part of the bridge where the line crossed the road, and the station was located in this immediate area.

Beware of bus using muggles and office muggles, you are looking for a magnetic micro.
