Although the first geocache in the world was placed back in May
2000, Wiltshire did not get a cache until the 6th September 2001.
This cache is GC1B78 "Avebury
Stone Circle (Wilts)" and was placed by The Wombles (though
they were known as Dave & Nicky back then). The cache started
off as a traditional cache but was muggled in early 2002, so the
cache was converted to a virtual in March 2002. Since then it has
received over 469 visitors, bringing cachers in from all over the
world to wonder at the Avebury stones.
The cache also shares its birthday with my own, so we would like
to mark the occasion with a small birthday party. We have been
saving the find on this cache for this special day, and we hope
that any local cachers that have not already found it will join us
on the evening of the 6th September to visit the location and claim
the find. It would be really great if we can get enough new finders
to push the total finds to over 500 on that day.
Even if you have found the cache, Claire and I would like to
invite you along to celebrate a decade of caching in Wiltshire for
a drink and cake at the Red Lion pub,
Avebury. We hope to meet up again with some of the friends we
have made in our first year of geocaching, and also to meet some
new faces too.
The Red Lion serves a wide range of food and drink daily from
10am to 10pm. They also have a value menu giving two mains for
£9.95. Parking is on a pay and display system (£1 per hour) but you
can get it refunded at the bar if you spend at least £5.
We have the front room at the pub booked from 6pm and then plan
to walk down to GC1B78 at around 7pm, claim the cache and then
return to the pub by 8pm for another round of drinks, birthday cake
and raffle.
We are hoping that one of The Wombles will be able to attend the
event to share stories of how caching has changed over the last ten
years.
Please log a 'Will Attend' if you can make it giving us an idea
of numbers so we can inform the pub.
Hope to see many of you there,
Damian (dlegresley)
