Mizar is the second star in the handle of the Big Dipper. It is of average brightness for the stars in the group, but can be distinguished by its proximity to us. At 78 light years away, it is only one light year more closer than Merak, the next closest star in the group. By the way, that one light year is a distance of 6,000,000,000,000 miles!
Many people love constellations, others love good walks in the woods, while some just love to collect smileys! If you love all three, then this is the geocache series for you.
To find the “Polaris Bonus Geocache” you will need to find all of the other caches in the series and obtain a clue from each one. When you have visited the seven stars of the Big Dipper you will be able to determine the location of the “Polaris Bonus Geocache.”
I would recommend visiting the caches in this order.
Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak, Dubhe, Polaris Bonus Geocache
Not all the walking is on trails, but I have done as best I could. There will certainly be some walking down overgrown trails, through relatively open forest and a little bit on the Sprague Brook Park Trail. Most people will probably be able to bee-line it from one cache to the next if you follow the suggested order. However, when searching for the “Polaris Bonus Geocache” (hopefully from Dubhe) you should stay on the Sprague Brook Park Trail until you are within a 150 feet of the bonus cache coordinates you determined.
