Dubhe is the star in the upper right of the bowl of the Big Dipper. It is also tied for the brightest star in the constellation. Dubhe also happens to be the most distant star in the constellation at 124 light years.
Dubhe is the second of the pointer stars in the Big Dipper because a line extended from Merak through Dubhe points in the direction of Polaris, the north star. Dubhe also happens to be the official state star of Utah!
Many people love constellations, others love good walks in the woods, while some just love to collect smileys! If you love all three, then this is the geocache series for you.
To find the “Polaris Bonus Geocache” you will need to find all of the other caches in the series and obtain a clue from each one. When you have visited the seven stars of the Big Dipper you will be able to determine the location of the “Polaris Bonus Geocache.”
I would recommend visiting the caches in this order.
Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak, Dubhe, Polaris Bonus Geocache
Not all the walking is on trails, but I have done as best I could. There will certainly be some walking down overgrown trails, through relatively open forest and a little bit on the Sprague Brook Park Trail. Most people will probably be able to bee-line it from one cache to the next if you follow the suggested order. However, when searching for the “Polaris Bonus Geocache” (hopefully from Dubhe) you should stay on the Sprague Brook Park Trail until you are within a 150 feet of the bonus cache coordinates you determined.
