Geocache Description:

GEOCACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES, YOU MUST VISIT THE SEVEN CACHES OF THE BIG DIPPER SERIES TO OBTAIN THE TRUE COORDINATES FOR THE POLARIS BONUS GEOCACHE. USE THE CODE:

AB CD.EFG North
TU VW.XYZ West

There is an unactivated Kids in Caching Geocoin for the FTF prize.

Polaris is also known as the North Star, Northern Star, Pole Star, and Lodestar and is the brightest star in the constellation, the Little Dipper. This means that you can use the pointer stars of the Big Dipper (Merak and Dubhe) to find Polaris and the Little Dipper. Polaris is very close to the north celestial pole, this means it is our current pole star because it sits atop the Earth’s axis of rotation. Interestingly, since it sits above the northern pole, you cannot see this star from anywhere in the southern hemisphere.

THE HARDEST PART IS THE WALK BACK TO THE CAR. HERE ARE A FEW HINTS

To get back to the suggested parking coords (42.35.665 N, 078 37.807 W) follow the currently very overgrown path you were on for your last 50 steps to Polaris, but continue on farther to the northwest (the same direction you were going) for about .15 miles more. This path will come to an east and west trail that you need to follow to the west (left) for a little over 0.3 miles (just north of Alkaid). Turn left on the trail and follow the path past Alkaid and back to your car (about 0.6 miles). ALL TRAILS IN THIS OPTION ARE OVERGROWN WITH TALL GRASSES, but the trail is fairly obvious.

Another option to get back to your car is go back to Phecda and then walk through the woods back to the parking coordaintes. This option is about 0.5 miles of walking through easily walkable woods.

To find “Polaris Bonus Geocache” you will need to substitute in the numbers for the letters of the code below by visiting all seven stars of the Big Dipper.

Location of “Polaris Bonus Geocache”
AB CD.EFG North
TU VW.XYZ West

Really observant geocachers will notice that in this series the pointer stars of the big dipper do, in fact, point to the location of Polaris!
