The Sydenham Basin Reserve was contructed over twenty years ago to capture stormwater and to the best of my knowledge,has never had water in it. It instead provides an off-leash dog park and area for kids to run themselve to exhaustion.
Each time I drive past the carefully constructed overflow spillway, I always have a quiet chuckle. The muddy puddles that I've seen after serious heavy rain are such a long way from the volume of water required to overflow the basin, the spillway is akin to wearing a helmet to play table tennis. That being said, retarding basins are more like an insurance policy than a reservoir. In storms, they temporarily store stormwater runoff from a drainage catchment, helping to reduce the impact of floods on the stormwater drainage system, and protect properties located downstream by reducing flow rates for small to moderate flood events. They are designed to catch rushing water and slow it down, taking energy out of floodwaters. They release water gradually, like a bathtub with the plug out. If a retarding basin reaches capacity, the overflow travels down a spillway to pass these higher flows from the retarding basin in a controlled and safe manner. So it may one day be of great value. This cache is hidden in the spillway. Please try and leave the area as you found it. I strongly recommend trying to find this cache without looking at the hint if you enjoy any sense of achievement.
