The east end of Hoosier Valley was not settled by folks from
Indiana. For the most part it was settled by Civil War veterans
from the east who were entitled to 160 acres of unimproved land
under the Homestead Act. Some signs to look for as you walk in the
woods; if you see the remains of large stumps, the land was not
farmed for crops, perhaps used as pasture. No stumps or small
stumps are a sign that crops were raised on it.
This land was originally the Abbott farm. Like much of the land in
the valley, when the depression hit, the owners could not pay their
taxes and the land reverted to the state. We want to warn you, if
you choose to attempt this cache at dusk or after dark, folks who
live in this area have reported seeing a man walking in the woods
dragging chains. Listen carefully and perhaps you will hear
him.
We love to go Geocaching. We really appreciate the effort folks
put in to provide caches for us to find and we hope you do too. To
make it the best possible experience for everyone, we ask you to do
a couple of things for us; if you want to take some stash, please
trade even, if you don't have anything to trade but want to take
something anyway, just take it. Leave the pebbles, bottle caps,
used theater tickets, etc. in your pocket. Then, would you please
take a couple of minutes to replace the cache where it was and
cover it at least as well as when you found it. Thanks.
