Lexington Manor was better known as Flat Tops. This was a
quickly built housing area for lower enlisted assigned to Patuxent
River Naval Air Station. The homes were duplexes with one, two,
three or four bedrooms. They were built out of cinderblocks and had
a flat, slanted roof. Pilots flying onto the base said they looked
like flat tops, hence the nickname.
The streets were named after naval battles; Salamanca, Lei and
Tanner. Along these roadways flowering cherry trees were planted
and each house had a good size yard.
In the early 1960's, this housing area was sold to a private
company. These homes became low cost housing for hundreds of
families, military and civilian. By the 1990's many of the
buildings were just about beyond repair due to age. Soon, it was
apparent that they needed to come down and the county acquired the
land.
