Geocache Description:

During a group committee meeting of the 2nd Smiths Falls Scouts in May 2011, I was explaining geocaching to a member of the group who happened to be a bit of a historical buff, or amatuer historian. He quickly got very excited, and told me the history of some local places which in turn I had to place caches just to pass the info along.

A local catholic cemetary which some interesting historical tenents.

Francois Shamiour
Born 1794 in Lower Canada
Married around 1816
Died between 1875-1881 (likely in Smiths Falls)

He married Mary Pauline Lombar, likely a relative of Francis Lombar, a French Soldier for whom the villiage of Lombardy is named. Francis settled there in 1820's, and kept a tavern.

Francis Shamiour was born in Quebec and as his marker shows, he once served in the war of 1812 before settling in Smiths Falls as part of the 1st Regiment Leeds Militia serving in the 2nd Company NO. 25.

He owned a 2 storey hotel of frame construction on the corner of Beckwith & Main Streets in Smiths Falls. (Approx. where there is a pizzaria now). He built it at some point between 1830-1840 and it was along the stage route from Brockville. After his wife's death he sold the business and became a teamster as stated in the Federal Census of 1871.

Francois Shamiour's grave marker is along side the highway and almost at the edge of the old section of the cemetary.
