Brannvakta i Baneheia Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

Geocache Description:

Just on the edge of the city center..

The geocache is located on a nice vantage point of Kristiansand city, and from this old fire post in Baneheia one could discover fire throughout the city. It is a popular hiking area and lots of "muggles" in the area, so be careful when you are looking for the cache.

Historie:

In English:

Already in 1833 there was erected a guardhouse in Baneheia, but it was only standing until 1843 when it was sold and subsequently moved. In 1884, there was built a new guard- and lookout post in Baneheia, meant as a fire prevention measure. The city center had been hit by two fires (in 1859 and 1880) since the last guard post was gone over 40 years ago.

The fire guard would help prevent something similar happening again. The fire guard was established on a vantage point where there was a clear view over the city and harbor. There firemen sat, with binoculars and looked out over the city. If there was a fire at daytime they hoisted a red flag. At night a red emergency light was lit and hoisted up the flagpole. At the fire guard, there were also two Danish bronze cannons that were fired when the civil fire teams should meet. Today one of those guns are standing outside the fire station on Nedre Lund.

On the fire post there was erected a guard house with a direct telephone line to the fire station. The building had three rooms and windows to the south, west and east, the guard room was 4x4 meters wide. In the middle of the floor stood a large stove that would heat up both the guard- and bedroom. Around the guard house, there was a high fence. Each of the three fire officers had a little garden where they cultivated currant, nasturtiums and squash.

The guard house on Drageknatten was a landmark for the local citizens, which was part of the Baneheia skyline. One of the citys great sons, Jens Bjørneboe, was so inspired that he painted a picture which he called "Brannposten" (meaning "The Fire Guard") in 1946. Bjørneboe, however, was more famous for his literary works than his paintings.

Despite the sentry in Baneheia was manned around the clock, a devastating fire broke out in 1892. About a third of the city burned down, which led to a reinforcement of the fire guard. The sentry was in use until the german invasion on the 9th of April 1940. The Germans then took over and used it as a guard post during the whole war. After the war, the fire brigade once again took over the guard post, but the fire chief Haslerud wanted to liquidate the whole sentry in Baneheia. He argued that the first fire message usually came through telephone and fire telegraph, and just exceptionally from the lookout. In 1946, the guard house was torn down and the fire guard in Baneheia was thus history.
