By 1900, this valley which runs parallel to the Boardman River valley was filled with farms. Homesteaders, many of whom had migrated north from Indiana, pulled out the stumps of the pine trees and planted crops. This trail was the main road through the valley from the Hannah and Lay owned railroad with a station in Mayfield to the Chicago and West Michigan depot at Beitner Station. Picture the teams of horses pulling wagons or sleighs in the winter which were hauling crops out and supplies in along this route.
Areas which were not plowed and planted still retain the stumps. The ones you see here are the remains of white pines which were harvested over 125 years ago. (4x4 recommended for travel west of this point)
We love to go Geocaching. We really appreciate the effort folks put in to provide caches for us to find and we hope you do too. To make it the best possible experience for everyone, we ask you to do a couple of things for us; if you want to take some stash, please trade even, if you don't have anything to trade but want to take something anyway, just take it. Leave the pebbles, bottle caps, used theater tickets, etc. in your pocket. Then, would you please take a couple of minutes to replace the cache where it was and cover it at least as well as when you found it. Thanks.
