Geocache Description:

This geo cache is part of the Venango-Forest Kidz Kache Geo trail (as of 7/12/15 the Kids Cache stamp is gone)

The Rockland Iron Furnace was Built by Andrew McCaslin in 1832. It was in operation until around 1854. It is situated just below Freedom Falls on Shulls Run in Rockland Township, Venango County. The Rockland Iron Furnace is one of the best preserved furnaces anywhere. The inner cupola is intact and you can crawl directly into the liner. This permits a complete view of the interior of the stack. There is a single tuyere on the LH side of the furnace and the access into the furnace can be clearly seen. The furnace was powered by a waterwheel. This site has one of the most complete mill races ever encountered. A small sub channel diverted water from the stream to a rock lined entrance channel. This in turn feeds a main mill race. The sub race is about 12 foot by 2-1/2 feet wide and 4-5 feet deep. The main race is 30 feet long and 3 feet wide. It starts out 5 feet deep and tapers to the wheel pit. This geo cache is part of the Venango-Forest Kidz Kache geotrail, a grant funded event designed to introduce youth to the interpretive, physical, and recreational benefits of geocaching. This geotrail is very kid-friendly and beginner oriented and each cache location contains historical, cultural, geological, or natual value. The Kidz Kache geotrail consists of twelve geocaches, six each in Forest and Venango counties. This cache contains a unique self-inking rubber stamp, which you use to stamp your Venango-Forest Kidz Kache passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum of eight Kidz Kache caches, you will be eligible to have your passport validated and receive a gift bag with locally donated prizes and a commemorative pathtag. You must have your official Kidz Kache passport with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. The event starts on July 15th, 2011. For complete details and to pick up a passport, visit these locations: in Forest county - Forest County Visitor’s Bureau and Marienville Ranger District; in Venango County - Lifelong Learning Programs and Oil Region Alliance. Please make sure you leave the rubber stamp in the cache so the next cachers can stamp their passport. The cache is a short distance away from the furnace and the camping areas. On the weekends this area is muggle central so use some stealth. An don't forget to check out the the iron furnace and just up stream 50 yards or so is Freedom Falls one of the largest falls in the area.
