Geocache Description:

[RO]

Since ancient times people have been saing “Our power is in water” and all mankind has tried to use their power and knowledge to use it in everyday life.

The potential of Somesul Rece River (Cold Somes) was quikly taken in sight by the great Austrian industrialist who saw a large hydropower potential here, hydropower that could supply electricity for Cluj-Napoca, a large city at a distance of 29 km. The technique used was Austrian, the workers were Italians, and after the construction, the majority of them remained in the built up colony and also rised an entyre village wich was named after them and yet bears that name: La Talieni.

The whole hydropower sistem Cold Somes included a adduction gallery that was fed from the compensation lake, built in the second stage, on the Rasca Mica (Small Rasca) Valley , tributary valley on the right side of Somes Rece (Cold Somes) River. Lake was placed behind a dam archwise, built of stone (granite came from Corabia career, today, protected area - geological reservation) and concrete. The lake can store 40,000 cubic meters of water, quantity wich can produce 4000 kWh every day.

The dam was equipped with an overflow of waters that was built in four stages, to reduce the speed of falling water, and at 9 m deep was connected the adduction gallery that go to the castle balance. On the bottom of the dam was located a small bottom gallery of 1 m diameter, which was equipped with a valve closure, with the purpose to periodically empty the lake for cleaning or other maintenance work that needed full emptying of the lake.
