Geocache Description:

It is NOT winter accessible.

This cache commemorates the top end of the North Star Trail which runs from Kimberley to Cranbrook.

The trail is built on the old railbed of the Sullivan Mine spur which was originally built to transport Silver\Lead\Zinc ore and concentrate from the Sullivan mine to the smelter at Trail in the early 1900's.

The ore was originally sent via horse drawn wagons on the North Star Wagon Road (McGinty Trail) to the Kootenay River. Once there it was loaded onto barges and taken down river to eventually end up in Great Falls Montana for smelting.

After doing this for 8 years, the rail line connecting the Sullivan Mine with the CPR line in Cranbrook was completed, making this process more efficient.

The rail line actually started at what is today called the 1915 mine Portal upstream from Kimberley on Mark Creek. It then followed the creek down to the town, through today's Plaztl parking lot to today's Shoppers drug Mart, which is on the site of the original passenger and freight rail station. Here passenger cars were added to allow people to travel to and from Cranbrook, including in the early years, students attending high school in Cranbrook.

Parking is available at either the arena parking lot or on Rotary Drive.
