This cache is located in Northampton Park, between the villages of Spencerport and Brockport, NY, west of the city of Rochester. It’s placed in a wooded area in the less-used eastern end of the park, and is accessible at about equal distance from at least three trailheads. You can stay on well defined trails for most of the way, but the last couple hundred feet is off the trail in open woods and flat terrain. The cache could be reached on cross-country skis in the winter and should be findable with up to six inches of snow on the ground. The container is a grey .50 cal ammo can, and is fairly well concealed at ground level. The cache contains a logbook and some of the usual goodies (pocket knife, Hot Wheels car, etc.) but in addition contains several packets of small “Keokuk Geodes”, which are hollow, crystal-lined rock nodules that are found in mineral deposits along the Mississippi River near Keokuk, Iowa. These seemed to be popular items in one of my other caches, so I’ve made them the theme of this cache.
Added 2/25/02: It's been suggested that the terrain rating is too low for this cache, so I checked out the one route of three possible that I hadn't actually tried and agree that for that route only it should be 2.5 to 3.5, depending on the time of year. I'm not saying which route that is, but it's the most fun and most scenic by far! The other two routes are "a walk in the park" and remain a difficulty 2/2.
