The road was resurfaced in 1991 in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the sister-prefectural pledge between Kagoshima.
Its name is derived from the rows of coral trees, the trees of Satsuma. The road runs all the way to Sekigahara for 35km.

「薩摩カイコウズ街道」と名付けられたこの花街道は、
主要地方道南濃関ヶ原線を中心として、
当市から関ヶ原までの約35Kmにわたって、
鹿児島県の木「カイコウズ」が植えられています。
