Geocache Description:

Located on an island in the River Derwent, next to Howsham Mill, an old water mill. The mill has been recently restored and is producing hydro-electric power.

The River Derwent flows from the North York Moors, across the Vale of Pickering, through the Howardian Hills, and finally across the Vale of York to meet the Humber Estuary. Along the way, the river passes by many weirs and old mills, which once milled the local cereal crops. Howsham Mill is one such location. However, unlike many old mills, this one has been restored, and now produces renewable electricity. The mill building, currently under restoration, was built around 1755 by a John Carr, a famous local architect, and the restoration project has been featured on various TV programmes.

Find the cache, and take a look at the restored building, and the waterwheel and the archimedes screw churning away. At weekends there will often be volunteers on site who will be more than happy to show you how the mill works, and tell you a little bit about it's past and future.

Please note: the island is accessed by a footpath starting from Howsham bridge. The footpath is level and flat, and suitable for wheelchairs and buggies, although it can sometimes be a little muddy. The owners have kindly requested that visitors only arrive during daylight hours. It's also worth remembering that during floods after heavy rain, parts of the footpath may be underwater.
