Geocache Description:

This is a short multi starting at the published co-ords which will bring you to the lovely little Methodist Chapel at Burnt Hill. You will need to answer the questions based on information available above the Chapel door. The cache is within easy walking distance and is a small click lock container, partially covered in camo tape (I ran out halfway through!). Parking is available outside the Chapel.

I could find very little information on the Chapel, but by chance was presented with a piece of paper that stated at the top, “In addition to what was written in The Broadsheet some time ago”. It went on to give the following memories of Burnt Hill Chapel from Mr John Alexander.

“I remember well as a small boy going to Chapel sitting round a large stove almost in the centre of the room with many other boys and girls. Welcomed by our Sunday School teacher Mr. John Tegg, who always gave each one a sweet, mostly a pear-drop. Then we had to repeat, “I must not play on Sunday, but Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, till Sunday comes again.”

Always in the congregation was my old Uncle Henry Alexander, dressed in velvet coat and top hat. He looked smart as he was six feet in height. I think he was near 97 years old when he died and told me never to smoke.

Functions:

Good Friday: After 3 o’clock if fine tea on the common, with Mr Chapman’s buns and lardy cake, with swings.

Anniversary Sunday: When each child was given a book for good attendance.

Harvest Festival: The chapel full to capacity, all produce sold on the Monday, and money taken to chapel funds. We had a choir to our Service of Song, namely ‘Billy Bray’ and ‘Teddy Button’ who performed at Eling, Hampstead Norris, Yattendon and Quicks Green Ashampstead.”

Mr Chapman’s buns and lardy cake were left on the common on Good Friday, this is what you are looking for (well, not really it’s a plastic container, but pretend!!)

Now onto finding the cache! At the published co-ords you will see three words and a date above the Chapel door:

Convert letters to numbers A=1, B=2 and so on.

A = Second letter of the first word.
B = First letter of the third word.
C = The first digit of the date plus the third.
D = Second letter of the second word.
E = The third digit of the date minus the first.
F = Third letter of the second word.
