Geocache Description:




Enjoy a walk along the easy Atiwhakatu track to this great wire swingbridge which spans many metres over the Holdsworth Creek, before it joins up with Atiwhakatu Stream. Carrying a recommended maximum of 1 person, it has a good strong wobble in it and can be quite slippery after even a drop of rain. After the swing bridge, the track becomes slightly more difficult and rough – and thus this is a good place to stop and turn around if you are just out for a very quick and easy day walk.

This cache is sited on the track between Holdsworth Lodge at the carpark, and Atiwhakatu Hut at the base of Holdsworth/Jumbo. This is an easy day walk for a tramper or hiker, and shouldn’t take much longer than 2 hours to reach the hut. It’s slightly uphill, but because it follows the course of the stream, the elevation changes only involve climbs over recent slips. We’ve added these three caches along the main trail to bring more people into the area, and to highlight the beautiful scenery that is tucked in this valley, straddling the Atiwhakatu Stream.

The cache, originally a 2L translucent Sistema, is now a smaller 500ml Sistema which when placed on 4 October 2019, contained just a waterproof log sheet and a children's toy, i.e. NO PEN so BYO.

Signal strength can be affected under the tree canopy and as a result, GZ might 'wander' a bit on your GPSr so allow for a discrepancy of +/-10m and/or refer to the hint.

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE RIVER ROCK - IT COVERS A LARGE HOLE THAT MIGHT HAVE SWALLOWED UP THE OLD CACHE. THE NEW, SMALLER CACHE IS ABOUT 300MM FROM THE ROCK BUT UNDER SAME FALLEN LOG
