Girl Guides celebrate 100 Years
In 2010, Girl Guides of Canada celebrated their 100th birthday. In the last 100 years, 7 million girls and women have enjoyed the fun that Guiding has to offer in: Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers, Jr. Leaders, Trex, Lones, Link, Trefoil Guild or adult leadership. 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides in Alberta. In the three-year period from 2010-2013, we are establishing the Sisters for a Century series of geocaches in as many cities or towns with Guiding units as we can. We hope you enjoy these easy caches as much as the girls and Guiders have enjoyed learning about geocaching and setting them up for you.
Guiding in Brooks
In 1932, Guiding began in the Grasslands District (Brooks, Bassano, Duchess, Patricia, Rolling Hills, Tilley, and surrounding area) with a presentation from Calgary Guiders on how to start and organize a Guide company. Mrs. Anderson was the first Captain. One of the original Guides started up a Ranger company three years later. Brownies also began around this time. In 1981, the seeds of Maiden's Quest, our annual summer week-long camp, were sown at an Area camp at Cypress Hills.
Currently there are units active in Brooks with girls travelling from the rural communities to participate in Guiding. Brooks offers programs for Sparks (age 5-6), Brownies (aged 7-8), Guides (aged 9-11) and Pathfinders (aged 12-14). We welcome girls and women from every facet of our communities and aim to develop leadership, curiosity, self-esteem, and independence in every woman. Come join us!
