Geocache Description:

This National Trust cache is located in Mallygill Wood - one of our less well known properties in County Durham. A real hidden gem!

The whole of Mallygill Wood is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument for its coal mining remains. During the 14th century coal had become a valuable commodity and at Mallygill Wood the coal naturally occurred near the surface. Monks from Finchale Abbey are believed to have mined the coal here. They dug down into the seam and then along to collect more coal, creating bell shaped pits. You can still see where these bell pit were today. Just look out for the hollows that can be found throughout the woods.

Mallygill wood is also a fantastic place for wildlife with plenty of woodland flowers on display in early spring.

The National Trust is a charity that protects special places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for ever, for everyone.

Please help us keep Mallygill Wood special by sticking to the footpath until you are close to the cache and not trampling the vegetation.
