The Beginning of St Bede’s parish & church

In the early 1820’s, the Catholic population of Bamber Bridge was growing rapidly, and Fr. Anselm Brewer, the Benedictine rector of St. Mary’s, Brownedge knew that another parish was needed to the south.  So, in 1822, Fr. Samuel Bede Day, also a Benedictine priest was appointed for this work.  He bought a field of about 3.5 acres from the Blackledge family living in Westwood House, and began to build a chapel and house.  The first stone of the chapel was laid on 8th April 1823 (a Tuesday), and the Solemn Opening with the first mass was on 8th September 1824 (a Wednesday).  So the 8th September is the birthday of this church.
