Geocache Description:

A panoramic view of both Crouse Harbour and Conche Harbour on Newfoundland's French Shore of the Northern Penninsula.

So much of the history of this shore was decided by monarchs and wars in far away Europe. Beginning in 1504 and for 400 years more, French fishermen sailed to these shores in search of the gold called cod. These harbours were their summer homes - but their wooden crosses and cannons remind us of the dangers they also faced. This cache will reward you with a panoramic view from the Hare Bay bird sanctuary in the north, to the Grey (Groais) Islands in the east, to White Bay in the south.

Icebergs were numerous on the sunny day the cache was set. Whales chased the caplin and herring into Conche Harbour, and we harvested iceberg ice closeby in Northeast Crouse. We even managed to get jigging for cod as part of the annual "food fishery". History and heritage live strong in this area.

Turn east just before Roddickton onto Hgwy 434 and drive over a dirt road for less than 30 minutes (21 km). As you crest the ridge with the communications tower on your left, look for a small parking lot at the base of a set of wooden stairs. Don't let the short climb deter you - the vista towards Crouse and Conche is worth the brief effort! This is your gateway to "The Heart of the French Shore"! (visit link)

The cache is in a screw-top container inside a larger Ziplock bag. The original items included:
- a pkg of birthday candles to remember the 85th birthday of Conche resident, Rose (Hunt) Casey, in July 2011
- trail tape so that you can always find your way back
- an Insectarium spider from Deer Lake, at the entrance to the Viking Trail
