Over the course of the building of the 27 km long North Star Branch
there were many times that overcoming the water presented obstacles
for the engineers. There was the more visible aspect of crossing
the St Marys River but there were many other incidences where water
had to be dealt with.
In many places its possible to see the original culverts that were
placed where water could wash out the tracks. As we travel the
modern day North Star Trail we still can see the areas where water
has been, and still is, a problem.
I believe that this is the first under water cache in the East
Kootenays. I tried to reach one in Scotch Creek but as it has been
set at a depth of 30+ metres if meant that scuba gear was
needed.
My cache container has been set under water at a depth less than 30
metres and it should NOT require any extra breathing apparatus. It
might be wise, however, that you practice holding your breath and
immersing your head under water prior to going out to try for this
cache. After a couple of weeks of practice I now find that I'm able
to hold my breath in excess of 45 seconds and am able to retrieve
the cache container on just about every try.
Please dry yourself off the best you can before opening the
container and signing the log. Also please be careful to seal the
the four-part container well before returning into the depths of
the water.
You might like to try the North Star Trail Bridge for access
to
this cache.
