This Hwy 95 pullout offers a nice view of the Camas Prairie, whatever the season. Besides the rolling farmland and distant mountains, you'll have a great view of Tolo Lake.
The Tolo Lake area was a traditional camping spot for the Nez Perce while they dug and dried camas roots, which were a staple of their diet.
It is named for a brave Nez Perce woman who was a friend to the white settlers during the Nez Perce War of 1877.
A group of Joseph's Wallowa band and White Bird's Salmon River band were camped at the lake on their way to the reservation just ten miles away when three young renegades from White Bird's band rode back down to the Salmon River and killed four white men, avenging a series of past wrongs. The killing continued for two days, resulting in fifteen victims.
The settlers at the town of Slate Creek heard of the killings and were concerned that there were so few men in the town and they wouldn't be able to stand an attack. They wrote a letter to the miners in Florence, asking for their help and their ammunition. Tolo, a Nez Perce woman living at Slate Creek, volunteered to deliver the letter.
Tolo dressed like a Chinaman in a blue suit and black hat, with her hair tucked into her collar. She rode the 26-mile trail into the mountains to Florence that night and returned the next day with guns, ammunition and 25 men.
After the war, she was the only Nez Perce awarded property off the reservation, and she continued to be a friend of the people of Slate Creek. She died in 1920 and is buried Red Rock Canyon, near Winona. Prairie.
