British Rail used to be well-known as a railway that did it best to
keep things running on time and it was a big issue if trains were
running late. Sadly things are not the same in the UK these
days.
Another thing British Rail did was to set up at least one
“watch room” at most of its stations. This had nothing
to do with the trains running on time but it was a place where a
passenger could sit down, pass the time of day, check the latest
timetables, or just plain cogitate..
Later, in an effort to cover deficits, British Rail began to charge
people who wanted to stand on the platform and “train
spot” or even charge more if a person wanted to make use of
the “watch room”. Another trick they had was if you
ordered a cup of tea, with sugar, they would provide your tea in a
mug that had an especially rough glazing on the bottom of the
inside. That way when you stirred your mug of tea it felt as though
there was lots of sugar in it, when in fact there was very little
(or none).
In 2011 the North Star Trail Committee saw fit to set up their
version of a “watch room”, adjacent to the trail, close
to this site. Now geocachers and other users of the trail have a
place to sit and take a rest. It is also a place where a geocacher
can check their GPS for coordinates and plan the next hunt. It is
even a place, if a person chooses to, where they can sit and watch
and yell out “Hi!” to other Trail users as they pass by
this location.
It is very unlikely that there were ever any “watch
rooms” previously set up along the North Star Branch so we
should thank the Trail Committee for such foresight as to set one
up here.
