Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the historic New Holland Gym built in 1921 which is now a medical/professional building.

In 1921 a building would be erected for the workers of Hall County's largest employer-- then known as the Pacolet Manufacturing Company, at that time and still today the only operational textile mill in Gainesville-- in a section of town called New Holland. It was a Mayburyesque village of salt of the earth people who liven in Mill houses and shopped at the company store and went to the company Doctor. But in this year, they would enjoy the grand opening of a building that would become the meeting place for social, recreational, and sporting activities of any conceivable variety of the day. The building sported the only indoor basketball court in Hall County at that time. Yes, If you were playing ball at New Holland, you were playing in tall cotton. I once spoke with an old-timer that shot the winning basketball goal as the buzzer sounded that in 1959 sent Lula to the Sate Championship. It was almost surely pandemonium as spectators watched from the balcony overlooking the court, some of them most certainly seated in the carousel swings that could be hand cranked to slowly circle the activities below. After school and on weekends one might bring a dime to be able to swim in the heated pool below the gym, where some of the older unruly kids would take turns making an illegal and dangerous dive into the pool from the railings of the bleachers. On at least one occasion, a foot slipped at the wrong time resulting in a nasty header onto the edge of the tiled pool below. Or, if you weren't much for water sports, you could bring a nickel to go bowling by descending another level below the pool to the two lane bowling alley where the pins would be reset by hand. After an active day, all participants had full access to the shower and locker facilities-- the boys on the west side of the building and the girls on the east-- separated , of course, by plenty of building in between. And the girls could have social hour in their respective "sorority" room upstairs while the boys could play card or billiards in their "frat" room on the opposite side. It was a layout that resulted in many courtships and lifelong marriages. Over the years the structure has been used for all manner of community activities from dances, birthday parties, and school activities to meetings of the KKK and temporary storage of the bodies of poor victims of the Tornado of 1936 (which the building survived unscathed). Later it was home to the local Girl's Club. Over the past 15 years, I have worked in this enchanting building-- the pool and bowling alley long since closed, but the main level converted into medical office space. As the owner of the building I am able to work with my clients on the original gym floor, where occasionally we shoot baskets into the same goal where a young man from Lula achieved a moment of greatness. I have always loved this place, and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories all the old-timers share about growing in the village, many of their memories centering on events that happened right here-- in the old New Holland Gym-- which they simply called, "The Building." As you log your find, kindly glance up at the clock tower (which we have restored to it original condition after over half a century) and feel free to make a note of the exact time of your find.
Congratulations boca bob for FTF!!!! And glad you stopped in the office so I could finally make your acquaintance
