Cheyne Walk is a historic street in Chelsea. It takes its name from William Lord Cheyne who owned the manor of Chelsea until 1712.
Many famous people have lived (and continue to live) in the Walk: some of which have been Keith Richards, George Eliot, David Lloyd George, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull, Sylvia Pankhurst, George Best, Lawrence Olivier.
The most prominent building is Carlyle Mansions which was named after Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 – 5 February 1881) a Scottish satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher during the Victorian era. He called economics "the dismal science", wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia, and became a controversial social commentator.
