Prairie Winds - Black Butte Traditional Cache
CBGA: We are sad to have to archive this cache but you can see from some of the logs that a local land owner does not appreciate geocaching or geocachers. Rather than cause further problems we will archive this cache. MD & S1 for CBGA

in our disclaimer.
Please plan ahead when doing the Prairie Winds caches in this area. This is the last cache that can be accessed by a car. Other caches along this trail to the east will require a 4x4.
PLEASE park on the pullout at the crest of the hill so that you can be seen from both directions AND for your own safety, take a minute to listen for any "rattling" sounds before you grab the cache.
This cache is part of a series called the “Prairie Winds Adventure Trail” developed by volunteers of the Canadian Badlands Geocaching Association. Enjoy the hidden secrets of Southern Alberta by getting off the beaten trail to sites seldom visited, scenic views and historic sites and buildings. Prairies are not flat and there is a reason for calling our trail “Prairie Winds”.
There may be other caches in the area.
Prairie Winds – Black Butte
The rocky outcrop on the south side of the road is part of the Sweetgrass Hills formation. Even though it didn’t reach the height and stature of the more prominent buttes that you see to the south, this one is still significant! This little guy marks the entrance into some wild, rugged and beautiful landscapes. The southern Pinhorn, The Milk River Natural Area, Kennedy Coulee Ecological Reserve and the rugged beauty of the Milk River Canyon all lie ahead. From this point you can continue on to the Pinhorn corrals by car if the road is dry. Travel beyond the corrals should only be attempted in dry weather with a high clearance vehicle. This is ranching country, please do not drive on the grass, drive only on existing truck trails and obey posted rules. Once the grasslands have cured off in late summer the fire hazard is quite high. Please be careful.
This area is remote and not patrolled on a regular basis. Take food and lots of water with you. If you break down or run into problems, it can be a LONG WALK OUT. You can get cell phone coverage from some of the higher points of land.
To receive a Prairie Winds Geocoin, you must have logged, as found, at least 40 of the Prairie Winds caches and then send an e-mail to lthbridge@gmail.com. We will check your profile and contact you for mailing arrangements. There are 100 geocoins available.
