Geocache Description:

A little cache hidden in a fairly well used patch of woodlands between Oatlands playing fields and Hornbeam Park station.

Not far from where I have hidden this cache is the site of the long forgotten Brunswick railway tunnel. Built in 1848 and opened on 20th July 1948 the tunnel went from Hornbeam Park, under Langcliffe Avenue and emerged at Harrogate Brunswick on the edge of The Stray opposite Trinity Church. The site of the station is now marked by a stone and a plaque.
The line was originally opposed for fear that it would bring unsavoury types from less civilised towns like Leeds or Bradford (!!) and the purpose of the Brunswick Tunnel was to hide the railway from view. The line, which then ran from Spofforth, had some great engineering over its relatively short distance; Prospect Tunnel, 825yds long, the Crimple Viaduct and the 400yd Brunswick tunnel.
However, by 1862 the central Harrogate station had been built and trains ceased to run to Brunswick. The tunnel was abandoned until WW2 when an air raid shelter was built in part of it.
Many local people are now completely unaware of its existance.

The tunnel is on fenced off private land and is NOT accessible to the public. An area near it is habitat to a protected species and should NOT be trespassed on.

The cache, however, is in a popular area for local dog walkers and kids on bikes.

The cache is a small, black click-top box. At time of placing it contains a FTF pin badge, mini pens, marbles, jet ball, dinosaurs and other little swapables.

This is my first cache. I have tried to get the co-ordinates as accurate as possible but please let me know if they could be improved.
