Geocache Description:

Please use the waypoints listed below to aid in your search. The most direct route may not be the easiest or most prudent as the direct route WILL result in either crossing private property or crossing a large swamp. (although that would be fine in winter) Trails will take you within 40 feet of the cache. Terrain is reflective of the length of the hike, about 2 miles round trip. You are looking for an ammo can.

Joas Park Nature Preserve is the latest land acquisition by the Chippewa County Land Conservancy. Dedicated in May of 2011 it is a 52 acre parcel that was generously donated by 97 year old Joe Joas for the purpose of keeping it wild for the study of nature and the enjoyment of the public. It's features include a pond with Misty Creek flowing into it, stately pines, hardwoods and some prairie/meadow. There are plans for trails to be developed but as of Aug 2011 there is one main trail that skirts the edge of the pond. Follow this trail and the waypoints below to the cache. There are also plans for the parcel to be clearly marked as a nature preserve and as part of the Conservancy. As of Aug 2011 the no trespassing signs have been taken down, but little identifies it as being part of the Chippewa Conservancy.

This cache is intended to give the seeker a taste of the new Joas Park Nature Preserve along the main trail. Path will take you down a hillside across a low area where Misty Creek runs into the pond and back up along some high ground to the cache location.

Getting to the Preserve can be a little tricky. As of Aug. 2011 the only access is along an abandoned railroad bed (future bike trail) near Casper Park. Please park at the listed coordinates (off road parking)and walk the abandoned railbed to the Preserve. Railbed was recently acquired by the state and signs along the bed clearly say that it is closed to all vehicular traffic and intended for foot traffic only. Entry point to the Joas Preserve is about .8 mile from parking.
