Geocache Description:

Ridin' and Socializin' on Grant's Traill

  • Who: Anyone who likes to cycle.
  • What: A fun time of cycling, fellowship and maybe even caching.
  • When: Saturday, October 15, from 9 a.m. until ?
  • Where: Grant's Trail. Meet up in the parking lot at the posted coordinates.
  • Why: It's fun!

Come on out and join your fellow SLAGA members for an enjoyable day of biking, fun, fellowship and maybe even some caching along the picturesque Grant's Trail.

The Ulysses S. Grant Trail (Grant's Trail) is an eight mile long "rails to trails" bike trail stretching through south and southwest St. Louis County, Missouri. As a former railroad right of way, Grant's Trail is flat and perfect for biking, running, inline skating, walking, or cross-country skiing. This paved trail slopes downhill as you go west to east in a gentle fashion, going from approximately 576 feet above sea level on its western end to around 418 feet on its eastern end.

The trail is open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. It has amenities such as restrooms and water stops along the way. You can view a map of facility locations here.

Geo-pets are allowed as long as they are on a six foot or shorter leash.

Even though the trail is kid-friendly, please be aware that the trail crosses some busy streets. Make sure kids know to wait and cross only with adult assistance. Also, the trail is very busy at times, so make sure kids know to keep to the far right of the trail to allow passing riders.

Since I am not from the area, I plan to bike the entire eight-mile length of the trail; however, you are free to bike any amount you wish.

This event is meant to be an easy-paced one for all skill levels. If you haven't biked this trail yet, it should be well worth your time. Take in the scenery, chat with cachers and also try to tackle one or a few of the numerous geocaches that can be found along the way, especially the "Tour De Grant" Wherigo. Add it all up and you have the makings of a great outing!

Plan to meet your fellow geocachers at the posted coordinates at 9 a.m. to sign the attendance log sheet. After a brief period of preparations and mingling, we can plan to hit the trail at around 10 a.m. You don't need a bicycle to attend, but it sure would make things a lot more fun!

Come on out and join in the fun!
