Geocache Description:

Pioneer Cemetery in Cartier

This resting place is one of three cemeteries in Cartier. Not much is known about it. A local effort is underway to write the history of Cartier.

The cemetery is not yet forgotten. Local residents still keep the grass cut. The writing on the grave markers is just about gone. Perhaps only the Good Lord knows just how many are actually resting in this place.

The cache is located outside of the cemetery; please remember to take a moment to think of those that came to towns like Cartier so long ago to build our communities.

Some information that our local historian has been able to collect on this cemetery;

1. Willie McHugh died 1909. His family lived on the current station side of the tracks. His father, Hugh McHugh, came to Cartier from Quebec. He was only about a year old.

2. Next, the biggest of the stones, is William Jones, born in 1854 and died in 1900. He came with his wife and children to Cartier before 1891 as they appear on the 1891 Census and the 1901 census. He worked as a Section Foreman for the Railroad. His son John also worked for the railroad.

3. Next is the stone of Chloe Margaret Tait, born around 1897 died 1906. She was the daughter of William and Millie Tait.

4. The second stone of William Jones is the first William's son, born 1886, died 1898. He appears on the 1891 census but not the 1901. (Some in Cartier believe that he may be the spirit that roams the Community Center.)

5. The heart shaped stone that sets closest to the road belongs to Lilly May Kinney who died in 1900. Her father was Rueben Kinney who appears on the 1901 census as a labourer for the rail road. Her mother's name was Margaret.

6. There is another small stone, level with the ground, that says "Father". It sits right in line with William, the elder's, stone. It is not known if that stone goes with his or if there is someone else under that stone.

7. According to hear say, there may have been others and that at one time there was a large white cross there.

Congratulations to ChooChoo1996 for being the first to find.
