King of the Castle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mad Mephams Mayhem: It's been there for more than a couple of years and has proved quite a popular little cache, but recent muggling has put it offline. Not likely to get out there again for a while, so am archiving.

Geocache Description:

I'm the king of the castle,
You’re the dirty rascal.
I'm the king of the castle,
Get down, you dirty rascal!

A great spot for little cachers to play this traditional game. Cache is a 35mm film canister and contains log and pencil.

On Sheepcote "Lane" a bridle way and foot path (some access to motor vehicles but in practice largely unused). Near and intersection of several by-ways a great spot for a family walk.

"King of the Castle" is an ancient child's game that might have Roman origins. There's a near-contemporary account of the siege of Hume Castle in the English Civil War in which the Roundhead commander Colonel Fenwick demanded the surrender of the castle and the governor Thomas Cockburn replied to him:
"I William of the Wastle
Am now in my Castle,
And awe the Dogs in the Town
Shan't gar me gang down."

There's no suggestion that Cockburn invented this bit of doggerel; he was obviously using a well-known children's rhyme. There are French and German equivalents, and in 20 BC the poet Horace recorded Latin verse that Roman children used for the same game:
Rex erit qui recte faciet; Qui non faciet, non erit.
