This is a cache placed in the original location of Guilford Center,
to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first settlement in the
town of Guilford. The cache is also placed to bring more awareness
to the
Vermont 251 Plus 4 Geocaching Club, a challenge to cache in all
251 towns and the four gores in Vermont.
About the cache:
The cache is along the edge of the
Guilford Center Cemetary. You are looking for a small camo'ed
lock-n-lock in a kid-friendly spot.
The cache is probably not findable in winter and the parking area
is not plowed.
From Guilford Center Road, take Cemetary Road and you will be on
your way to the cemetary.
About Guilford:
The town of Guilford was first chartered April 2, 1754 but
wasn't settled until 1761 (which is why the town is celebrating its
250th anniversary in 2011). Speculation about the town's name
indicate that New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth named it
after Francis North, the 1st Earl of Guilford, a member of
Parliament in Great Britain.
You can hardly tell, but the original town center was on top of
this hill, before being moved to the current location in the valley
below. Several of those buildings, including the Guilford Center
Meetinghouse were up here first.
Guilford was the most populous town in Vermont from 1791 to
1820.
Guilford is a town of 39 square miles, located nearly in the
southeast corner of the state. It's population now is about
2,046.
