The area is well known for the famous battle taken place there in XIII century. A battle of great importance for King Ivan Asen II.
You'll see at the place a three piece white stone work.
The promise carved on the stone ( see photo) proclaims, that a monument will be erected at the spot, honoring King Ivan Asen II victory over Theodor Komnin on March 9 1230.
The story is as follows:Quotation from Bulgarian Heritage
"The possibility Ivan Asen II to impose his influence in Constantinople makes the task of Theodor Komnin to restore Byzantia almost impossible. That's why the epirian emperor begins to prepare himself for a war with Bulgaria. In the early spring of 1230 his army invades into the bulgarian lands along the riverside of Maritsa. The surprise say its word and Ivan Asen II doesn't succeed to prepare himself good for defence against the invadors. The battle is on March 9th 1230 "somewhere around a place near Euros, which called Klokotnitsa". How assured was the epirian ruler in his victory shows the fact that he brings with him and his family. But Ivan Asen II succeeds to inspire a braveness and daring in his soldiers, stressing the treachery of Theodor Komnin, and causes a catastrofical defeat of the self-confident emperor. "He was captured by the enemies and many of his relatives, from the superior officials and the eminents ... " . The regular soldiers the bulgarian ruler sets free. After that victory Ivan Asen II joins almost with no fight many fortresses in Macedonia, Thessalia, Albania, serbian lands, joins and Odrin to Bulgaria. The big victory gives the right to bulgarian ruler to titles "king of bulgarian and greeks". "
Well, word said stone thrown ,as we say in Bulgaria and yet this promise is already 34 years old, and still unkept.
