Geocache Description:

Take a short drive to see an old bridge.

Take a short drive out along the Belmont Valley road to find this cache. This railway line used to run between Port Alfred and Grahamstown and was the main supply line between the two towns. There were once several sidings along the line where the train would stop to offload supplies and collect produce.  The cache is at the bridge, but just a few hundred meters East is the Oak Valley Siding.

For most of this section of the Belmont Valley, the road and railway run alongside the Blaukranz stream, which is a tributary of the Kowie. The steep nature of the valley results in some spectacular bridges (the best known of which is Blaukranz Bridge GC17ZCD). This bridge is not as spectacular; but still a lovely old bridge in fairly good shape.

Please note that the water in the stream is quite polluted being downstream of several dairy farms and Grahamstown's sewage works. There is no need for you to wade through the water and we suggest that you keep kids well away. In addition there are no guard rails on the bridge itself and while not too high, it's still not something you'd want to fall off! The cache is in the railway reserve, no need to cross fences onto private land.

There have been some comments on the approach to the cache, please take a look at the terrain rating before attempting this cache.

FTF goes to Navimate, logged during the Lets Cache Grahamstown event
