Geocache Description:

A bracing walk on an undulating path from the banks of the Ythan down to Forvie Kirk and the coast beyond.

Forvie Kirk, dedicated to St Adamnan, dates from the 12th century and was built on high ground, rendering it less susceptible to the sandstorms that gradually reclaimed Forvie Village.

According to local legend, Forvie village was wiped out because of curse placed on it by three sisters. They’re said to have been cast adrift in a leaky boat to deny them their inheritance, as heirs to the land.

In a fit of rage, they screamed: “Let nocht bee funde in Furvye’s glebes / Bot thystl, bente and sande”
in other words, may nothing be found in Forvie's fields but thistle and sand.

The curse whipped up a storm that continued for nine days and nights. By the time it ended, sand had buried the village.

All that is left now are the remains of Kirk, though some items recovered during excavation, including a baptismal font, are on display in the Stevenson Centre in Collieston.

The path continues on round the coast, taking in some magnificent clifftop views.

The path begins at the car park just over the Ythan from Newburgh and is easy to follow. Pass through the trees, take a sharp left and simply follow down to the coast. The walk is relatively easy for folk in good health though the path is undulating and boggy in places. Boots recommended. Younger children will manage it fine with encouragement, but it's not really suitable for buggies.

The cache is a traditional cache with a good stock of goodies for kids.
